Dharavi: An Urban Case Study Part II

Dharavi: An Urban Case Study
The following report is the second part of a two part urban case study of Dharavi, the infamous slums of Mumbai, India. The development of Dharavi is the center of attention of the world. With plans of redevelopment underway, the case studies present facts and an analysis of the present situation, and the proposals and its shortcomings. The report presents a more theoretical perspective into the architecture of the slums and the urban phenomena that it is.

Part 1 of the case study is titled 'Reflections of Dharavi' as it presents factual information of the current state of Dharavi, and architect Mukesh Mehta's highly controversial proposal for redevelopment.

Part II of the case study is titled 'Spontaneous Order and Emergent Growth' as it analyses the urban growth of Dharavi. This part of the study starts from the conclusion of the first study and analyzes the opposite to the Urban planning approach, identified in Part 1.

Both these papers were written for Unit 320 & 321 in Year 3 of BA (hons) Architecture for History and Theory of Urban Design.
